AGT is back and brought its 12-best acts from a pool of YouTube video submissions to the stage; however, the less than stellar performances likely left many viewers preferring to see paint dry. Nonetheless, by the end of the long night, America was asked to do its duty by voting through their favorite YouTube dud of the competition. First up was “Clint Carvahlo & His Extreme Parrots” from Las Vegas. Clint’s parrot “Kitten” swooped down from the heavens and into the AGT arena once the feathery phenom heard Clint’s “Here Kitty” call. Dubbed the “Evil Knievel” of parrots, “Kitten” successfully completed the mission and was given a treat for not leaving a trail of poop while in flight.
Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chad Johnson was released over the weekend after an alleged domestic violence incident over the weekend. Johnson was trying to make the Dolphins roster after a sub-par season with the New England Patriots last season. He was charged with a domestic violence violation after he was accused by his wife Evelyn Lozada of head butting her after an argument over a sales receipt on Saturday evening. Chad Johnson was released after posting a $2,500 bond on Sunday. Miami Dolphin head coach Joe Philbin stated that he would talk to Johnson directly about the situation and explain why he was released.
The US women’s Olympic soccer team won their third straight gold medal by defeating Japan 2-1. The win avenges the loss the US suffered to Japan in last years World Cup final. Ashton Eaton won the decathlon fellow American Trey Hardee finished second. Usain Bolt won the 200-meter dash and he becomes the first sprinter to win both the 100-meter and 200-meter events in consecutive Olympics.
US gymnast Aly Raisman won the gold medal in the floor exercise event on Tuesday. Earlier she won a bronze medal in the balance beam. It will be an all American final in women’s beach volleyball today as the team of April Ross and Jennifer Kessy will face off against Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. The US men’s basketball team will play Australia in the Olympic quarterfinals and if they are victorious the US will play the winner of the Brazil-Argentina game also being played today.
The US women’s Olympic basketball team crushed China 114-66 on Sunday and in the process tied one record and set several others. The record they tied was for most points scored for a women’s team in Olympic competition. The 1992 team scored 114 points against Spain. The 2012 team broke US records for most assists and baskets scored Jamaican Usain Bolt won the 100-meter dash in an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds. Bolt also won this event at the 2008 Beijing games. Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake finished second and won the silver medal and Justin Gatlin of the United States finished third and captured the bronze medal. It was a good day for the United States yesterday in the Olympics. Gabby Douglas won the women’s all-around gymnastics title. Douglas became the first African-American to capture the event. Michael Phelps won his twentieth medal in the Olympics by winning the 200-meter individual medley. US swimmer Ryan Lochte finished second. The victory for Phelps also gave him his sixteenth career gold medal. The U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team set a scoring record in their 156-73 romp over Nigeria. In the game the US broke Olympic records for 3-pointers, field goals, and field goal percentage.
Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian ever on Tuesday winning his 19th Olympic medal. Today, he won his twentieth medial in the 200-meter Individual medley. The US women’s gymnastic team won the gold medal it was the first for the US since 1996. US cyclist Kristin Armstrong won a gold medal in the Olympic time trial event. Serena Williams reached the quarterfinals in women’s tennis by blasting Vera Zvonareva 6-1 6-0. The US men’s Olympic basketball team beat Tunisia 110-63. Kevin Love and Andre Iguodala both score 16 points and Kevin Durant had 13. Six US players score in double digits. The men’s team faces Nigeria Thursday.
The US Olympic men’s basketball team cruised past France 98-71 on Sunday. Kevin Durant scored 22 points Kevin Love came off the bench to score 14 points. The US team got off to a sluggish start and only had a one point lead 22-21 after the first quarter but in the second the United States outscored France 30-15 to pull away for the victory. This opening game in the Olympics was considered a decent test because France has four starters that play in the NBA.
The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympics are tonight in London. Some of the stories to keep an eye on are the rivalry between United States swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Lochte is expected to give Phelps a run for his money in several events. The United States men’s basketball team closed out pre Olympic exhibition play with an impressive 100-78 wins over gold medal contender Spain on Tuesday. Defending Olympic 100 meter and 200 meter sprinter Usain Bolt is looking beatable and it is going to be tough for him to pull off another double gold medal performance in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints.
This year’s Summer Olympics are heating up rapidly, as the official opening ceremony will be held Friday night, July 27. The largest multisport competition in the history of the United Kingdom runs from July 27 through August 12, and London has been gearing up for this event since they were awarded the venue back in 2005. The games officially start Saturday, July 28, when the most watched multisport competition in the history of sport hits the airwaves and Internet with its 2012 edition. Sport lovers worldwide will be tuning in with patriotic fervor, cheering for their home country’s athletes as they strive for Olympic gold.
