The opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympics are tonight in London. Some of the stories to keep an eye on are the rivalry between United States swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. Lochte is expected to give Phelps a run for his money in several events. The United States men’s basketball team closed out pre Olympic exhibition play with an impressive 100-78 wins over gold medal contender Spain on Tuesday. Defending Olympic 100 meter and 200 meter sprinter Usain Bolt is looking beatable and it is going to be tough for him to pull off another double gold medal performance in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints.
It is going to be a big weekend in the American League because many of the contenders for divisional championships and the two wild card spots are going head to head in weekend series. The Oakland A’s will be at Baltimore. Oakland and the Los Angeles Angels are in a virtual tie for the top spot in the wild card race. Baltimore is 1 ½ games back. Boston travels to New York to face the Yankees, New York has a comfortable 7 ½ game lead over Baltimore in the American League East and is 10 ½ games ahead of the Red Sox. Boston is 4 ½ games behind in the wild card chase.
The Chicago White Sox will go to the Texas Rangers. The White Sox lead the American League Central by a ½ game over Detroit, Detroit is also a ½ game out of in the wild card chase. Texas leads the LA Angels by 5 games and the Oakland A’s by 5 ½ games in the American League West. Tampa Bay will going to the west coast to play the LA Angels. Tampa Bay is 2 ½ games behind in the wild card race.
The National League has only two series this weekend where two playoff contenders are facing each other. The Los Angeles Dodgers travel up the California coast to play the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco is 3 games ahead of LA in the National League West. The Dodgers are 2 back in the wild card. The New York Mets will be at Arizona to face the Diamondbacks. This is an elimination series for both teams. The Mets have fallen apart since the all star break and Arizona has not been able to play consistent winning baseball so far this season. New York is 6 ½ games behind in the wild card and Arizona trails by 5 ½ games.
