What I Know – Olympics Baseball and Other Stuff

The US women’s Olympic basketball team crushed China 114-66 on Sunday and in the process tied one record and set several others. The record they tied was for most points scored for a women’s team in Olympic competition. The 1992 team scored 114 points against Spain. The 2012 team broke US records for most assists and baskets scored Jamaican Usain Bolt won the 100-meter dash in an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds.  Bolt also won this event at the 2008 Beijing games. Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake finished second and won the silver medal and Justin Gatlin of the United States finished third and captured the bronze medal. Andrew Murray of Great Britain defeated Roger Federer of Switzerland 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to win a gold medal in men’s tennis. Sanya Richards-Ross of the US won the women’s 400–meter dash with a time of 49.55 seconds.

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 on Sunday and salvaged one game from their three game weekend series.  Pittsburgh now trails the division leading Reds by 4 ½ games in the National League Central division. The Pirates are in virtual tie with the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card race.  The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Sunday. Baltimore took two out of three games versus the Rays over the weekend. Baltimore stays one game ahead of Tampa for second place in the American League East. Baltimore is one game behind both Oakland and Detroit in the AL Wild Card chase and Tampa is two games behind. Some big series open up tonight in major league baseball. In the American League, the New York Yankees travel to Detroit, Texas is at Boston, and Los Angeles goes to Oakland. In the National League, San Francisco will be at St. Louis.

The NFL preseason open up last night as the New Orleans Saints defeated the Arizona Cardinals 17-10 in the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton Ohio. Cardinal quarterback Kevin Kolb suffered a bruised chest in the game. Jeff Gordon won the rain shortened race at Pocono. It was Gordon’s first win of the season and he has slid into the last wild card slot in NASCAR’s Chase For The Championship. Points leader Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished 32nd
