About College World Series
Omaha, Nebraska has been the site of the College World Series (CWS) since 1950. The best 64 teams begin the NCAA Division I Men's Baseball playoffs, with the 8 teams that survive the Super Regionals broken down into two 4-team brackets hosting double elimination play. The last two teams standing face-off in the College World Series Championship, and this is often the proving ground for talented college athletes that you will see playing at the next level in the MLB World Series. Actually, the term "College World Series" is trademarked by Major League Baseball, and it is no wonder that the teams which show up year after year in the CWS tend to send large numbers of players to MLB teams.
Traditionally, many of the same teams show up annually in the CWS played at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha in mid to late June. In 2003 the tournament moved to ESPN, and this is also when the championship final became a best of three series between the two bracket winners. In the last few years, the Universities of South Carolina, North Carolina, Oregon State, Texas and LSU have done well in the super regionals, and often end up on college baseball's biggest stage.
The University of Southern California has 12 World Series titles overall, and an impressive 8 CWS championships from 1968 through 1998. Louisiana State University picked up where USC left off, and has 6 college World Series championships from 1991 to 2009. The Oregon State Ducks have been strong recently, playing in all 3 CWS match-ups from 2005-2007, winning 2, and are highly ranked in the Regionals each season. The University of South Carolina is another perennial champion in recent years, playing in the World Series Championship matchup from 2010-2012, and winning two of those three contests.
The University of Texas won their first CWS way back in 1949, and has played in a record 34 CWS finals matchups in all. Present in the championship matchup in 6 years from 2000-2012 and winning 2 of those titles, the Longhorns will always be listed in the Las Vegas odds on college World Series potential champions. And you can never count out a long-shot like the Fresno State Bulldogs, who overcame the favored UGA Bulldogs in 2008 to win their first-ever CWS title. Entering the playoffs Fresno State was posting some long odds, and a smart bet on the right underdog each year can pay off big dividends in the exciting College World Series Championship matchup.
