Vegas Odds On NCAA SEC Football 2014

From the universally respected Paul "Bear" Bryant who prowled the Alabama Crimson Tide sidelines for 25 years in his trademark Houndstooth hat, to the universally vilified Steve Spurrier, whose sideline tantrums and hilarious facial gestures became famous in his 12 years at Florida, the Southeastern Conference of NCAA Football has had its fill of characters. But regardless the team, one thing the SEC has become known for since its inception in December of 1932 is Defense. Teams like Alabama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn and Georgia traditionally have defensive units that rank among the best in the nation and make life miserable for their opponents year in and year out. You can imagine how this affects the SEC Football odds.

About SEC College Football

Regarding in-conference, the SEC is known as a group of teams who annually beat up on each other, making it hard to escape the year undefeated. Nonetheless, the NCAA Football National Championship team has come from the SEC the last six years in a row, from 2006 to 2011, and eight out of the last fourteen years. The recipe for such championship success? Fast, hard-hitting defenses and a "grind it out" offensive game plan which stresses running the football, wearing down the opposing defense, and keeping the opponent's offense off the field.

Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, and consisting of an Eastern and Western division the SEC is the most successful NCAA conference on a financial basis, perennially leading the nation in revenue distribution to its members. That includes an SEC record $220 million for the 2010 - 2011 fiscal year, and the SEC is also the first NCAA Division I football conference to adopt a Conference Championship Game, played in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta annually. Alabama boasts the most SEC championships with 22, along with 14 national titles. Tennessee has claimed 13 SEC championship trophies, Georgia 12 and LSU 11. All told the conference owns 36 national championships among its 14 team members, and nine of the conference teams have played at least once for the SEC championship trophy, making the Vegas odds on SEC football all the more thrilling.

As far as in-conference rivalries go, the SEC has hosts some of the oldest and most traditional football matchups of all time. The Auburn - Georgia hate-fest has met nearly every year since its inception in 1892, for a total of 115 games as of the end of the 2011 season. There is no love lost between the two teams in the matchup that is known as the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry. Alabama - Auburn is an in-state rivalry which is just as heated when they play in the Iron Bowl annually, and the Georgia - Florida matchup held every year in neutral Jacksonville, Florida is known as the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and let's just say that the contest on and off the football field in Jacksonville can become very heated.

The 2012 NCAA football season will see Missouri and Texas A&M join the Eastern and Western SEC divisions respectively, bringing the total number of SEC teams to 14. Both teams bring a winning tradition to what can easily be argued is the toughest NCAA conference, and as reigning NCAA Football Champion and winner of two out of the last three national titles, Alabama is an early favorite to win the SEC championship and vie for another national crown. Auburn won both the SEC championship and national title after the 2010 season, and LSU looks to be a serious player again this year. The Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide are all currently ranked in the top 5 of the ESPN preseason NCAA football poll, where the Arkansas Razorbacks and South Carolina gamecocks give the SEC 5 of the top 11 teams. It appears the Southeastern Conference is ready to write another chapter of NCAA football dominance in 2012, as several teams are viable contenders to leave their stamp on the NCAA Division I College National Championship this year.
