The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox are about to pull off a mega trade that will influence the pennant race in the National League and both teams for years to come. Boston will trade Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, and Nick Punto to the Dodgers. Los Angeles will trade James Loney and four minor league prospects.
The Dodgers are acquiring a proven talent in Gonzalez who terrorized National League pitchers while he played in San Diego. He will give Los Angeles some needed pop in the batting order. Crawford and Beckett are considered gambles for the Dodger organization. Crawford is a talented player that just never caught on in Boston after signing a long term contract worth over 100 million dollars. Beckett is on the disabled list after having Tommy John surgery and is not expected to pitch until next season. Nick Punto is a good utility player that will help Los Angeles off the bench.
Boston is in full rebuild mode they dump four veteran players whose total contracts are over 200 million dollars. They acquire Loney like Crawford has a lot of potential but never really fulfilled his promise with the Dodgers. The Red Sox also will receive Allen Webster the Dodgers top pitching prospect who has top of the rotation potential in the package of minor league players.
This will be an interesting trade because these types of deals do not happen at this time of the year. Usually the type of deal that occurs after the non-waiver trading deadline involves an individual player traded for a prospect. This deal proves that the new Dodger ownership group is serious about putting a World Series contending team on the field every year. They have added a lot of salaries in this deal and the deals they made at the trading deadline in late July.
Boston has thrown up the red flag on this season and probably next season too. The Red Sox were considered a solid choice to reach the playoffs in 2012 but strife between manager Bobby Valentine and the team derailed the season. They have cast off a lot of salary while trading for some prospects that could help them in the future.
The keys to this deal are Crawford and Beckett: if they can come back Los Angeles will have the upper hand in this trade. If not the Dodgers will have two large contracts that will hamper their budget for years to come.
