What I Know – Olympic Games MLB Action and the Latest in Football

US gymnast Aly Raisman won the gold medal in the floor exercise event on Tuesday. Earlier she won a bronze medal in the balance beam. It will be an all American final in women’s beach volleyball today as the team of April Ross and Jennifer Kessy will face off against Kerri Walsh-Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. The US men’s basketball team will play Australia in the Olympic quarterfinals and if they are victorious the US will play the winner of the Brazil-Argentina game also being played today.

The US Olympic boxing team will not have a medal winner for the first time in Olympic history as the last American hopeful Errol Spence was eliminated. Australian Sally Peters won the gold medal in the 100-meter hurdles edging out American’s Dawn Harper and Kellie Wells.

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 8-7 in 14 innings and with the victory are now only 41/2 games behind the American League East division leading New York Yankees who dropped a 6-5 decision to the Detroit Tigers. Baltimore is now in a virtual tie with Oakland and Detroit for top spot in the AL wild card race. The Los Angeles Angels are a ½ game behind and Tampa Bay is a 1 ½ games back. The Washington Nationals took back the best record in the National League last night by beating the Houston Astros 3-2. The Cincinnati Reds fell to second best in the NL as they were defeated by the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1. The lost was the second straight to Milwaukee and their third overall.

Matt Flynn will be the starter for the Seattle Seahawks in their preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night. Flynn is in a tight competition with rookie Russell Wilson and last season’s starting quarterback Tarvaris Jackson. Earlier in the week Seattle signed free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens to a one year contract. It is rumored that Owens ran a 4.45 forty yard dash in his private workout for the Seahawks. The Penn State football team will have new look uniforms this season. Names will now appear on the back of the jerseys and a blue ribbon will also be added to show support for child-abuse awareness.
