NBA Free Agency NCAA Football And Other Goodies

The free agent signing period began on Sunday and there have been some interesting moves. The Houston Rockets have signed Chicago Bull free agent Omer Asik to a three year 25 million dollar contract. The interesting part of this contract is the third year of the deal Asik will be paid 15 million dollars this type of deal is called a “poison pill” contract. The Rockets by structuring the contract with a large third year payout makes it nearly impossible for the Bulls to match it.

The Portland Trail Blazers have offered the Indiana Pacers restricted free agent center Roy Hibbert a maximum contract offer sheet.  The contract offered is a 4 year 58 million dollar deal. The Pacers will have the option of matching the contract later this month. There is a good chance the Pacers will allow Hibbert to leave but it will be a sign and trade deal where Indiana will get something in return from Portland.

Other NBA news has Orlando’s Dwight Howard asking for a trade to the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are also involved in acquiring Joe Johnson from the Hawks. Nets free agent guard Deron Williams will decide between the Nets and his hometown Dallas Mavericks.

Ohio State’s running back Jordan Hall will be out 10 weeks after cutting his foot last week. The cut damaged a tendon that required surgery. This is important for the Buckeyes because Hall was going to play an important role in the Ohio State offense this season. Hall has the ability to play multiple positions in the new Buckeyes offense. This will force freshman Bri’onte Dunn into action. Dunn played well in the spring and proved to coach Urban Meyer that he can run the ball and catch it also.

Georgia’s Isaiah Crowell was dismissed after being arrested on several gun charges early Friday morning. Crowell rushed for 850 yards as a freshman last season. The Bulldogs have two of the top freshman running backs coming in this season.

It is the annual Major League Baseball All Star Game snub season. One of the more interesting situations has National League manager Tony LaRussa formerly of St. Louis leaving Cincinnati Reds players Johnny Cueto and Brandon Phillips off the team. The Reds and particularly manager Dusty Baker feel this is payback from a 2010 brawl between the teams. The brawl started when Phillips said something to Cardinal catcher Yadier Molina and tapped his shin guards with his bat. During the melee Cueto kicked back up catcher Jason LaRue in the head causing a concussion that effectively ended LaRue’s career.

There is no doubt that Tiger Woods is back. Woods won his third tournament of the year defeating Bo Van Pelt by two strokes in the AT&T National. Woods was draining key puts at key times when that happens you know he has his game back in order.  Get more information about exciting golf events that you can dive into with our odds on Golf section.
