Vegas Odds On Orange Bowl 2014

The Orange Bowl, like the Sugar Bowl and the Sun Bowl, is the second oldest bowl game in the country behind the "Granddaddy of Them All", the Rose Bowl. Played on New Year's Day, the Orange Bowl is one of the four BCS Bowl Games that precedes the eventual BCS Championship Game. As BCS participants, the selected Orange Bowl teams receive an $18 million payout. Played at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, the Orange Bowl contractually includes the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Champion unless they are already slated for the National Championship Game. Branded as "The Home of the ACC Champion," the ACC has nonetheless only won one time from 2006 to 2012. As one of the 4 BCS Bowl Games, the Orange Bowl stadium also hosts the BCS National Championship Game one week after the Orange Bowl is played, doing so on a four-year rotating basis along with the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl.

About the Orange Bowl

Vegas Odds On Orange Bowl teams usually mirror the fact that the two colleges playing are among the best in the nation. So it is no wonder that the major Division I college football conferences are heavily represented in this important postseason bowl game every year. The Big Eight Conference has sent a team to the Orange Bowl a record 42 times, with the SEC next in line with 33 appearances. An independent team has made it to the Orange Bowl 28 times, and the Atlantic Coast Conference has placed 19 teams in the game over the years.

As far as Orange Bowl Championships go, the Big Eight boasts 20 victories, with Oklahoma owning 11 and Nebraska 6 (Nebraska also owns 2 Orange Bowl titles as a member of the Big 12). The SEC is next with 17 wins, the Alabama Crimson Tide taking 4 Orange Bowl championships, with Florida adding 3 wins, Georgia and LSU posting 2 each, and Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee all winning one time. When Georgia Tech was a member of the SEC, they went 3 - 1 in Orange Bowl play. Florida State owns 3 of the 6 ACC Orange Bowl victories, and Penn State has 4 Orange Bowl championships, 3 as an independent and 1 as a member of the Big Ten.

With many NCAA Division I football programs playing in multiple conferences over the years, Oklahoma leads all teams in both appearances and wins, showing up 18 times and taking down 12 Orange Bowl titles. Right behind them is the previously mentioned Nebraska, with 17 appearances and 8 victories. Miami is next, playing in the Orange Bowl Championship Game 9 times and winning 6, and both Alabama and Florida State have been elected to play 8 times, the Crimson Tide winning 4 titles and Florida State taking home 3.

With a little help, winners of the Orange Bowl stand an outside chance of being crowned National Champions, and you often see the winning team piling the points on after the victory is in the bag in an attempt to influence voters. There is no better example in recent memory than the 70 to 33 beat-down West Virginia gave to Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl game played after the 2011 season. And from 2004 to 2012, it was anybody's game, with a different Orange Bowl winner crowned each year. The only certainty every year is that we will see a hard-fought battle between two of the top NCAA Division I college football teams, and that's really all you can ask for.
